Sandroyd Pupils Complete Sponsored Walk to raise £4000 for ACE SMA

We are thrilled that Sandroyd pupils have raised £4000 for ACE SMA, a charity close to our hearts that is dedicated to improving the lives of children living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Pupils at Sandroyd took part in a sponsored walk within the Rushmore Estate. Children walked different distances according to their age, ensuring the challenge was appropriate for all year groups. Although the routes were adapted to account for warm weather conditions, the event was a tremendous success, and donations continue to come in.

“We are incredibly grateful to all the staff and students at Sandroyd for taking part in this walk to raise money for ACE SMA. We have been truly overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown by families and friends, and it was inspiring to see everyone walking in such warm conditions for such an important cause. Seeing our daughter, who lives with SMA, able to join in and be part of this special fundraising event made the day even more meaningful for our family. It has been wonderful to see the whole school develop such a strong understanding of SMA, and we cannot thank the Sandroyd community enough for the kindness, compassion and support they have shown us and the wider SMA community.” — Sophie Howes, Co-founder, ACE SMA

ACE SMA is a UK charity founded by Sophie and Michael Howes following their daughter’s diagnosis with Spinal Muscular Atrophy in 2019. SMA is a rare, genetically inherited neuromuscular condition and the charity raises awareness of SMA, supports research into a cure, and promotes exercise as a means to maximise mobility and quality of life for those living with the condition. ACE SMA is currently funding a clinical study in partnership with Oxford University researchers into the benefits of optimised physiotherapy for children with SMA who are receiving disease-modifying treatments.
