At Sandroyd, we work hard to foster a love of reading in our students, providing young Sandroydians with the opportunity to enter new worlds and travel into the realms of imagination through an exciting range of literature.
Reading for pleasure is an important part of our curriculum; from personal reading within school and the boarding houses to library lessons, Rest and whole school reading periods and the Breakfast Book Club. Our students have dedicated reading time every day. Our Librarian, Madame Cournil, also organises a variety of activities for the students, including weekly news quizzes, Library assemblies, “Book, PJs and Hot Choc” on a Thursday evening and themed author events.
Students come to the library for a timetabled session every week and are welcome to visit before, during and after school. It is always open.
The library offers a range of fiction texts for all ages and is stocked with a selection of non-fiction to support learning and feed students’ interests. We aim to keep informed about new and exciting publications and authors but we also have a wide range of classics. In addition, we subscribe to a large number of magazines, such as First News, The Week Junior, How it Works, BBC History Magazine and Bushcraft. There is something for everyone.
Our Librarian and dedicated team of Library Assistants are on hand to help with any queries and recommendations, not to mention the wealth of reading experience amongst the Sandroydian staff.
We also have a specific library area of fiction and non-fiction books designed for our junior children. It is an exciting and stimulating environment offering books that appeal to all tastes. The Junior Reading Challenge inspires children to read, collect points, certificates and rewards.
Author Visits and Book Week
Author visits are arranged during Book Week, alongside the Travelling Books Fair, and provide the students at Sandroyd, from The Walled Garden up to Year 8, with the chance to meet popular authors, ask questions and hear all about their writing (and illustrating) process. It is a hugely enjoyable occasion for all, with visits in the past from authors such as Lou Kuenzler, Piers Torday, Justin Fisher, Maria Farrer, and Paul Geraghty.
