Skills Week: Year 6

Skills Week: Year 6

Monday

Year 6 kicked of skills week with a French morning. First, we had "Le Tour de France". Children were given a map of France and had to retrieve information about different regions by cycling to various places on the Sandroyd ground. The rain did not dampen our cyclists' enthusiasm, as they cycled to Paris, Britany, the Cote d'Azur, Burgundy, etc...

After "croissants et chocolat" to recharge our batteries, we then learnt how to order ice-creams in French, a very useful skill! Students then created little dialogues and performed to their peers, reinforcing the vocabulary. We rounded up the morning with an authentic Orangina!
In the afternoon our hardy Year 6s took to the outdoors for Archery, Rocket exploding and Bush craft skills in our Parachute classroom!

Blurb from Claudia:

Mill on the Brue has been an absolutely incredible experience for everyone, including the teachers.
It started with an hour long bus journey, which included the girls singing as loud as they could and the boys laughing whilst blocking their ears.
When we got there we took VERY heavy luggage up a hill to our dorms.  We had a tour of Mill on the Brue, and the main buildings. We had a fire drill and then got straight into activities, once sorted into our groups. The sparrows (6C+ Bertie, Jasper and Georgia) enjoyed getting soaked in raft building, the boys team's raft having broken after 20 minutes, the girls (+ Jasper and Hector) though had kept together, just! After that, everyone had fun in an hour of free time with a high catching game, and then we ate a delicious meal of chilli. We then toasted marshmallows over a camp fire, whilst enjoying each others company. Our first half day at Mill on the Brue had been a huge success, and we all had a lot of fun.

Blurb from Alice:

Once all the girls in the dorm had finally rubbed sleep out of their eyes, the whole of Year 6 trooped into Breakfast, we ate and then went straight into a day packed full of fun.

Our first activity was crossing the river, and we did this as a year group, but in 3 teams. Each team was given an A frame and 2 ropes on one side of the river, and the same on the other. We set them up so that you have to cling to on to a piece of rope while tip-toeing precariously across another with the river just under you. Lots of people fell into the river while others managed to make their way across still dry. Everyone enjoyed it. After a quick snack we had another activity.

After this we had an obstacle course, free time and then lunch, followed by The Leap of Faith (which includes jumping off a very high poll while attached to a harness) and clay oven cooking.

We have all loved every second of today, and I know I will love the rest of the trip.

Blurb from Cecil:

I am having a wonderful time here. This morning, we had a lovely breakfast of bacon sandwiches to the sound of DJ Bunday’s tunes. Then is was off to activities. Today they included, team building, zip wire, assault course. Action packed!
My favourite activity was the zip wire. It was super fast and really fun. I also enjoyed canoeing very much. I am sad to say good bye but I have amazing memories. Thank you to everyone at Mill on the Brue!
