Year 7 Trip to Stephen’s Castle
On Thursday 11th May, Year 7 undertook a habitat study at Stephen’s Castle, an area of heathland near Verwood. The aim was to compare and contrast two habitats, wet and dry heath land. Pupils used quadrats to survey the number of plants within these two areas of habitat.
The second objective was to collect and identify invertebrates using sweep nets. Thirdly we looked at the reptiles which are found within a heathland habitat. Stephen’s Castle is a SSSI, and home to all six British reptiles. The highlight of the day was spotting an adder, a slow worm and a sand lizard.
