Years 1 and 2
At The Walled Garden and throughout Sandroyd our aim is to nurture, care for and develop the potential of each child, encouraging them to delight in discovery, experience the joy of learning as well as celebrate their own increasing knowledge.
Our strong sense of family carries through the school and all of our children have opportunities to work alongside, play with and get to know other children throughout the school.
Key Stage 1 is made up of our Year 1 and Year 2 classes in adjoined purpose built classrooms within our architect designed building. This allows for the classes to be separated during specific learning tasks as well as providing opportunities to join together to share learning experiences and social times.
Our highly skilled and trained staff members provide wonderful activities tailored to meet the needs of each individual as well as on the development of key learning skills. This is implemented through interaction with real experiences, ensuring that children have the competencies and knowledge they need to succeed. In our happy, nurturing environment the children benefit, not only from sessions with specialist teachers, but also from the extensive grounds and facilities at Sandroyd, allowing for regular welly walks, nature rambles, wildlife observation, gardening, swimming, gymnastics and theatrical performances.
During term time the children benefit from a wide curriculum and a structured timetable. The school day for the Year 1 and Year 2 runs from 8:30am until 3:45pm and includes a snack time of fruit / vegetables and milk, as well as a freshly prepared hot meal by the chef for Sandroyd.
At The Walled Garden we have a diverse and interesting array of after school activities which the children in Year 1 and Year 2 may take part in. These range from ballet to horse riding, fencing to cricket and ukulele to performance art. A list of activities is provided for parents and children to select from each term should they wish to take part.
The curriculum for Key Stage 1 is very much part of the whole school at Sandroyd. Our small class sizes help to ensure that individual attention can be given to each child and that daily reading takes place with a trained staff member. Specific subject areas are over seen not only by the Head of The Walled Garden but also by the Heads of Department in Sandroyd which ensures that the curriculum is regularly updated and lessons provide broad ranging and interesting activities. Our highly motivated and qualified staff provide wonderful classroom based experiences for each individual child ensuring that they reach their potential and beyond! Regular trips and outings augment the learning further and link with termly topics and activities. The Walled Garden curriculum provision includes a selection of subjects taught by specialist staff including French, Spanish, German, Music, Art, outdoor learning, swimming, gymnastics and sport.
