Junior Wessex Athletics – 11th June

An early departure for sunny Lymington could only mean one thing- time for another Junior Wessex! First up were the 100m heats where Bella Simpson-Gee and Wilf Jones got Sandroyd off to a flying start- Wilf in particular who won his heat by a few lengths, earning himself a place in the final. Meanwhile, Arthur Moore and Ella Harvey were out amongst the field events doing their best against the opposition. Back on the track, Bella Tylor, Ben Haskell and Harry Simpson-Gee ran with determination in the 75m sprint and 800m. Bella Smith-Bingham and Olivia Dowling had a good day in the High jump, as did Frank Allfey, Isla Prior and Arthur in the throwing. Onto the relays where the U11 boys stormed into the final with the U9 and U10’s narrowly missing out. Our solo hurdler Archie Wolseley Brinton came a very respectful fourth, only to miss out on the final by a nose. Harry Simpson-Gee jumped an impressive 3.71m in the long jump earning a silver medal in the U10 category. It was a good day for the jumpers, as Wilf Jones was also placed in the long jump, 3rd, with a jump of 3.82. Onto the 200m where Martha Kennedy, Fredo Ashworth and Olivia Dowling all worked hard to finish in the top 10 of their heats. Back to long jump where Bella Tylor finished 5th with a jump of 3.21m. Now for the grand finale- Otis Irwin won the U11 Boys 800m so convincingly he was able to turn around at the finish line and watch the others fight for 2nd and 3rd. In a time of 2 mins 39 seconds, Otis narrowly missed breaking the school record for a second time this term. Huge congratulations to all of the Sandroyd Athletes!
