Team Sandroyd Beat The Sun!

At the start of term Team Sandroyd’s Gemma Peat, India Brown, Khan Brewer and Matt Hughes took on the mountains (and weather) of the Lake District in the annual ‘Race the Sun’ competition. After a gruelling 13 hours of climbing, riding and canoeing the saddle sore quartet crossed the finish line before sunset...

The race started just after sun rise with a 24 mile mountain bike course which included traversing the 750m high Wolfs Crag and Clough Head. With weather conditions described as the worst in the 10 year history of the race, the ride over the challenging ‘Old Coach Road’ (“there will be blood” said the race organiser) was tough, with 60mph gusts knocking riders from their bikes. That stage however proved to be a mere warm up for the jolly climb to the top of the near 1000m Helvellyn peak.

With the wind in no mood to show mercy and with visibility down to 10 metres there was no time for a picnic! Nevertheless, our intrepid four were undeterred, and after a quick descent the team headed to Thirlmere where they posted the 2nd fastest canoe time of the day. No mean feat considering there were 75 teams in the race and the 2 mile course was slightly choppier than normal!

All that was left was a straightforward 26 mile saunter (!?) over hill and dale back to the finish line. The race marshals were a little economical with the truth as they assured everyone there were “no more hills”; however the team pushed hard to achieve a very respectable time to finish midway up the mixed team leader board.

It was an incredible experience and Team Sandroyd would like to thank everyone for their support and generous donations to the Action Aid charity - the team are close to hitting their fund raising target of £2000.

Geocaching - March 2011

For ten year 7 and 8 boys the Sunday activity of Geocaching introduced a whole new world of treasure hunting on a global scale!

The boys armed with a GPS tracked down the hidden treasure box deep in the Chase Woods.  Leaving nothing but a written log and swapping over some 'treasure' the boys returned the geocache to its hiding place for the next participants who might track it down.

Sandroyd’s first mountain biking night ride!

Image

On a foggy and very wet under tyre Wednesday night in November Mr Brewer took Edward Allwood, Theo Todd, William Ferguson, Arthur Woyka and Mr Morris out on the first ever mountain biking night ride at Sandroyd.  This was made possible by the generous loan of six sets of high performance off road lights from Stonehenge Cycles in Salisbury.

Starting at Sandroyd the boys travelled up the school drive to the beginning of the Ox Drove and travelled across single track to the Quarry where they then progressed to Win Green.
Returning from Win Green the boys travelled back along the single track and through the Rushmore Estate before negotiating OMG hill and returning to Sandroyd.
The boys who were splattered from head to toe in mud thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of riding at night and were amazed at how different the sensory experience was in comparison to riding in daylight.
Many thanks again to Stonehenge Cycles for the loan of lights and making the night ride possible.
