Please contact our Head of Riding, Nikki Beament, for any information about our riding activities The Captain of Riding for the Summer Term 2012 is Archie Lowe ----------------------- TETRATHLON Please click on the link below for this Sunday's complete schedule of timings -----------------------
A Sandroyd Rider Qualifies for Badminton Grass Roots We are delighted to announce that our riding captain, Archie Lowe, found himself in the Eventing Magazine at the end of April after winning the British Eventing (BE) competition at Larkhill. He was notified by British Eventing that this win meant that he had qualified his pony, Comanche Colours (aka Manni) for Badminton Grass Roots. Archie qualified Mr. Bosco, his other pony, last Autumn by winning another BE competition. Most British Eventing (BE) riders are adults and so to have achieved this at his age is outstanding. Congratulations Archie and we very much look forward to hearing how you get on. -------------------------
SHOW JUMPING SUCCESS On Sunday 11th March Archie Lowe (pictured below) competed at Millfield Senior School and qualified for the National Show Jumping Finals. Archie jumped clear in the 90 - there were 125 competitors from about 30 schools taking part. There were 54 clear rounds that went through to the jump-off and Archie came second by just 0.4 seconds, becoming one of only two to qualify for the NSEA Finals.
Congratulations! ------------------------
JUMPING WITH STYLE AT MILLFIELD
26th February 2012 Results for NSEA Qualifier at Millfield Prep Having being balloted out and then reinstated we headed off to Glastonbury to Millfield prep for the JWS qualifier. The team of Poppy Weldon, Jemima Stratton, Milo Kennedy and Giles Langham had been practising hard over the last few weeks and the progress they have made showed as they took part today. The course was longer than they have done before with 15 elements which made 17 jumps. Fences 1 to 8 were the showjumping section and then 9 to 15 were the crosscountry section. The SJ section was reasonably straight forward but the XC section had some tricky lines. Poppy was the first to go and Zak was not too sure about all the spooky things but Poppy rode strongly and got around the course with one stop at the brick wall and one pole down. Jemima was next and again rode with determination but Xavier also stopped at the wall and then Jemima went past one jump but thankfully remembered at the last minute so retraced her track and jumped it well. Her pony coped well as it was a big track for them and he hadn't been well lately so it was a very good effort. Milo was then going and tried really well having the wiggly planks down and just lost count of his jumps but again retraced his tracks and did the rest of the course well. Then it was Giles who rode a very stylish and balanced round for a double clear well within the optimum time. The final placings meant we were 8th out of 15 teams and Giles was about 10th individually from 70 riders So congratulations to all. The winning teams were from Bryanston and Blundells so our team of younger riders held their own Now they have their first one under their belt, roll on May for the next qualifier at Bryanston. Lets keep it up Frances Cattell

Results from Half Moon Show Jumping on Sunday 20th November
Class 1 2'3'' Giles Langham 2nd - Poppy Weldon 10th Geordie Thompson went double clear and just missed out on a place and Jamie Lowe had one stop in the jump off phase Class2 2'6'' Giles had 4 faults in jump off but had a very quick time Poppy went double clear but just missed out on a place. Jamie went double clear and Geordie had one stop as he lost his stirrup!! But as only Giles had competed at this height before all the others rode very well and hopefully learnt from the experience. ----------------------------- St Mary’s School Team Show Jumping Competition 24th October 2011 Nine pupils from Sandroyd took the opportunity to take part in this year’s St Mary’s Halloween Team Show Jumping Competition at Half Moon Stud with our most experienced riders looking after those less knowledgeable and, for their efforts, receiving compliments from other schools on how tight they looked as a team and how remarkably focused. The challenge was for our competitors to complete a two-phased course ideally with speed and without fault. Out of the 11 teams who entered Sandroyd came away with 6th and 8th place. A respectable achievement, especially since a few were competition novices. It is wonderful to see an increasing number of riders at Sandroyd wishing to maintain the competition legacy of those who have gone before them. A big SHOUT OUT to our teams... Blue Team (8th place) Sophie Frampton-Hobbs 1st phase = 4 faults Poppy Weldon 1st phase = Clear / 2nd phase = time 41.45 with 4 faults Giles Langham 1st phase = Clear / 2nd phase = time 34.29 Double Clear Jamie Lowe 1st phase = Clear / 2nd phase = time 39.93 with 4 faults Purple Team (6th place) Annie Frampton-Hobbs 1st phase = 4 faults Jemima Stratton 1st phase = Clear / 2nd phase = time 30.93 Double Clear Milo Kennedy 1st phase = Clear / 2nd phase = time 40.66 Double Clear Geordie Thomson 1st phase = Clear / 2nd phase = time 35.60 Double Clear …and individual rider, Archie Lowe, who continues to maintain a winning streak on Manni! Mr. Bosco (2’6”- 2’9”) 10th place Comanche Colours – aka Manni (2’9” – 3’0”) 1st place With kind thanks, to Frances Cattrell for supporting all our riders and their families through a long and worthwhile day, and for providing an overall account of the day’s events. Nicola Beament Head of Riding ---------------------------------- National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) Jumping with Style Championships, October 2011 Addington Manor Equestrian Centre - Buckinghamshire In the run up to the National Championships this year it was an unfortunate scenario for Archie Lowe: the NSEA having moved forward the championships some 6 weeks earlier than scheduled from years previous (a suspected move to lessen the possibility of postponement due to snowy weather) and a convalescing pony from a minor bout of lameness, where the partnership between the two could only be refreshed two days before the event. On the day of the event the partnership proved tight. Archie rode a balanced and somewhat calm round to closely match the style and partnership marks of that achieved by the overall winner, despite Manni showing concern over the echoing crowd cheering and clapping around the stands. An unlucky pole down during the show jumping phase and having accrued 3 time penalties during the cross country phase on a very lengthy course meant Archie was sadly knocked out of the rosettes. We are very proud of Archie here at Sandroyd for his efforts. It is an achievement in itself to have been awarded one of the few qualifying places for the National Championships and it is believed that if fitness could have been maintained in the run up to the event a place would have been probable. Archie has proven his talent of adapting his riding style to fit most situations and to the personality of his horse as he boasts winner status having won a British Eventing competition at Pulborough and Larkhill a few weeks earlier on his other, if a little more challenging ride, Mr Bosco – well done! The National Championships are there for the taking next year, Archie, we have every confidence in you! click here for the individual results With kind thanks, to Frances Cattrell for supporting the Lowe family on the day and for providing an overall account of Archie’s performance. Nicola Beament Head of Riding ------------------------------------ Wilton Hunt Branch of the Pony Club Novice and Junior Hunter Trials Sunday 25th September 2011 A wonderful day with great results for Sandroyd, especially for our new comers and old pros alike! Click here for full results Class 1 is a great class for any newcomer boasting a well-designed course situated in the enclosed environment of the wooded area and set at an inviting height of 1’6”. With the opportunity to build confidence before this class by riding a similar course in the Clear Round, to put partnerships between pony and rider to the test. The Clear Round proved an experience for our newcomers Poppy Miles, Clara Munte and Claudia Neish who had a few stops, but the overall learning curve was exceptionally rewarding for them all. We were sadden to hear Jonah Kennedy was too poorly to take part but look forward to seeing him ride for Sandroyd in the near future In Class 1, Poppy Miles’ achievement saw her complete the round with fewer stops. With an unknown bogey time of 1m 10secs Claudia, riding Sandroyd Popeye, finished within the rosettes to achieve equal 6th with a rather speedy round of 1m 02 secs. Clara led the way, riding Sandroyd Teddy to a clear round with a time of 1m 09 secs, rewarding her with 1st place. Also our congratulations go out to Milo Kennedy and Arabella Brooking who also took part in Class 1 and took their experiences into the more challenging class in height of the 2’3” individual and pairs. The 2’3” class saw a positive ride from our mini riders: Arabella Brooking on her pony Chunky Monkey after a few stops at the Fan fence and rosettes for Milo Kennedy on his pony Tolly placed equal 5th and Poppy Weldon on her pony Zak placed 7th. Poppy used her experiences in this class to progress to the 2’6” and although eliminated was chuffed with her overall performance and with the partnership she is now building with Zak, her new pony of a few months. Jamie Lowe led the way to a resounding 1st place in the junior class at 2’3” riding through the timed section on his pony Gem in 28 seconds rewarding him with 1st place, beating the rider who came in 2nd by 12 seconds – a speedy round! Although a pupil of Sandroyd, unfortunately we cannot boast another 1st for the school achieved by Jemima Stratton in the mini 2’3” as she was riding for her Pony Club of South & West Wilts. A well-deserved place nonetheless and perhaps a talent who will be seen riding for Sandroyd in the near future! Archie Lowe, who is saving his pony Comanche Colours (aka Manni) for the forthcoming Jumping with Style National Championships in October, took on the challenge of the pairs class riding Sandroyd’s Popeye with his brother Jamie on speedy Gem - Popeye had a job to keep up! Nonetheless, their performance at each dressing fence was spot-on and rewarded them with 1st place: a good round too from both Milo and Poppy Weldon riding with their friends Jemima and Emily. By all account, everyone had a wonderful day with lots of smiles on our Sandroyd riders’ faces. The weather wasn’t too bad either! Over the last two years poor weather has caused cancellation of the Wilton Hunter Trials held at Sandroyd which has been disappointing and particularly frustrating for the organisers Nigel and Sally Lefroy of the Wilton Hunt Branch of the Pony Club. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU for their continued commitment to Sandroyd and our facilities, as this is such an agreeable competition for all novice and junior riders alike. With kind thanks to Frances Cattrell for supporting our riders on the day and for providing an overall account of their performance and to Patty Lowe for her photography skills. Nicola Beament Head of Riding Jamie - a winner in Class 3 on Gem
Milo and Jemima
Jamie and Archie on Gem and Popeye - winners of the pairs

Cattistock Hunt Branch of the Pony Club and Bruton School for Girls One-Day-Event (ODE) at Aldon Sunday 18th September 2011 Well, what a day – a winner by all accounts! Archie Lowe, our individual competitor and Riding Captain at Sandroyd, did extremely well to compete in tricky weather conditions this weekend not just with the partnership of one pony but with a second too: first on his reliable pony Gem and then on his rather complex horse Bosco, he completed a three-phased competition of dressage, show jumping and cross country.
Archie in training for the event Throughout the day the weather seemed extremely determined to be an added challenge to the competition, so much so that it was rather difficult to see ahead of you at times. Considering the conditions Archie and Gem rode as a solid partnership throughout the 3 phases, despite having had a couple of show jumps down as they progressed around the course during another heavy downpour. The main event was wrapped up however with Archie achieving a wonderful result on his rather more challenging horse, Bosco. The weather causing the cross country phase to run late gave Archie only 10 minutes to change from his pony Gem to Bosco, to start the three-phased process again. Considering the short warm-up, the partnership between Archie and Bosco was relaxed on their approach to the dressage arena, so much so that the test was ridden superbly putting Archie into 3rd place with 2 marks between 1st and 3rd. After yet another downpour, the phase of show jumping was next. Over quite a tricky course Archie jumped a lovely clear round and, in the knowledge that very few clear rounds had been achieved amongst the other competitors, he left the arena feeling rather pleased with his effort because, at times, this can be Bosco’s weakest phase. With the cross country still to tackle, Archie was now in the lead - no pressure then!! Being one of the last on the cross county course and after another downpour, Archie kept a cool head and rode a sensible clear round and as the day drew to a close it was thought Archie had clinched the winning title, although it was rather nerve racking waiting for the results to come in. As the sun started to break through the rain clouds, Archie’s efforts were rewarded with the winning title, presented with a rosette for 1st place and a new rug for Bosco during prize giving. Big CONGRATULATIONS to Archie, as it takes a talented rider to tackle such weather conditions and to compete against fierce competition on the day. What a result – well done!
