Alex Payne – Sky Sports

Old Sandroydian, Alex Payne, delivered our second Headmaster’s lecture of the term on Wednesday evening to a packed theatre. Alex started by chatting about  some memories of his time at Sandroyd and could even recall with great detail one of his most exciting matches played at prep school here.

Alex then spoke about his journey from school to heading up the Sky Sports rugby presenting team. He talked about the highlights of his job and the difficulties that he can be presented with. It was fascinating to hear how the VT clips are put together and how much time, thought and effort goes into these.

Alex then discussed the Lions tour, both this year’s tour and also previous tours with the Lions. What was clear throughout was Alex’s passion for rugby and the respect he has for many of the players and his colleagues! He was honest about mistakes he had made and how he had used these to work harder. Alex stayed behind for well over an hour to answer many questions from children, staff and parents and we thoroughly enjoyed hosting him for the evening. It was a fascinating insight into the world of a sports presenter.

We are hoping he will bring the Sky Sports team down to feature one of our rugby fixtures next year….!
