I am very grateful to Nikki Beament for the following report and photographs:

Stonar School Mini & Junior Inter-Schools One-Day Event Championships 2008

Early morning on Saturday 17tMay 2008, prepared and anxious, a team of Catherine Frampton Hobbs, Charlie Davies, Alick Salomon and Tarquin Stephenson headed off to Stonar School in Melksham to take part in the Mini Inter-Schools One-Day Event.

The day was set to be mentally and physically challenging!  They were each required to remember and execute, without fault if possible, The Pony Club Introductory Dressage Test; to remember and execute, without fault if possible, a course of 10 show jumps at 0.75m; to ride and execute in the optimum time of 4 minutes and 42 seconds, a 2045m cross country course of 16 fences including challenging combinations and a water jump.  And, as if that wasn’t enough, each phase required a change of dress and equipment for not just themselves but their ponies too, thus ensuring each discipline was executed with safety and in accordance with the Pony Club Eventing Rules 2008.  With thanks to their grooms – Mums - of course!

Although the team wasn’t placed on the day they came away having had a great deal of fun and with new knowledge and experiences.  For some it was their first experience of a one-day event and for others it was also the first experience for their horse.  Although a show jumper by trade Catherine rode her pony Tootsie Jack around his first cross county course with only two stops.  If asked Charlie Davies would confirm that dressage on Lightning is not his favourite discipline, nevertheless he completed the test with a good score of 37.9.  As well as those contributions from Catherine and Charlie, Alick Salomon - with his horse Granby Trooper, and Tarquin Stephenson - with his horse Quest, cleared the show jumping course without fault – well done All!

Harry Lane also competed at Stonar on Sunday 18th May 2008, representing Sandroyd as an individual competitor in the Junior Inter-Schools One-Day Event.  Alex Stephenson unfortunately had to withdraw after hurting his hand playing cricket but I am sure he too would have ridden well.
