Dear Parents,
I was delighted to open the doors of The Walled Garden to our new pupils in September 2004. The building itself is beautifully designed by local architects, Philip Proctor Associates, who were careful to keep the plans environmentally sound. We have taken the lovely old wall of Sandroyd’s Victorian Gardens and used it as the spine of the new school, a successful blending of the old and the new.
I have spent a long time planning the curriculum, timetable and extra activities for the children, and buying the latest books, schemes, games and educational equipment to enhance their learning.
The teachers and I have designed a curriculum which is both broad and balanced. We teach the essential subjects, numeracy and literacy every morning when the children are fresh and receptive. This leaves the afternoons free for PE and games, swimming, music, French and computing, all taught in conjunction with specialist teachers from Sandroyd.

The Main Hall
As a parent myself, I am always thinking about the wonderful opportunities an ideal school should offer my child: the space, the facilities, the teachers, but most of all the warm, caring atmosphere of the school.
If you would like to find out more, I would be delighted to meet you and show you around.
Yours sincerely
Pippa Shon
Circle and Golden Time
At The Walled Garden we have circle time meetings every week where the children talk about issues which specifically concern them and learn the importance of sharing and taking turns. We also follow the six “Golden Rules” set out below. This helps the children to know how to behave, creating a disciplined environment in which to work and play. If they follow the Golden Rules, they are rewarded with “Golden Time” where they can choose a range of activities each week.
The Golden Rules
| Do be Gentle | Do not hurt anybody |
| Do be kind and helpful | Do not hurt people’s feelings |
| Do work hard | Do not waste your or other people’s time |
| Do look after property | Do not waste or damage things |
| Do listen to people | Do not interrupt |
| Do be honest | Do not cover up the truth |
Rainbow Road
At The Walled Garden we follow a programme known as Rainbow Road. This was originally designed for children with co-ordination difficulties, and those needing to develop further their handwriting and perceptual skills. However, it soon became evident that all children benefit from these activities and hence the programme. Six foundation areas are covered and all children will improve their skills in these different areas. They are:
٭ Sensory Motor Skills
٭ Fine Motor Skills
٭ Motor Planning
٭ Visual Motor Planning
٭ Visual Perception
٭ Memory
From these different areas the Rainbow Road programme covers 18 different “foundation” skills. There are various activities for the children to work on in the different foundation areas. Every activity is designed to last from 5 to 15 minutes. Sometimes the children will be working independently, with a teacher or in small groups.
