The Friends of Sandroyd aim to host social events, which involve parents of children at the school as well as the children themselves. Over the years the Friends have been able to raise several thousands of pounds for projects in particular departments that we feel might enhance the lives of the boys and girls and we have been able to support the designated charity of the term. The committee consists of a representative from each year group at Sandroyd and The Walled Garden and a few members of staff. Do not hesitate to contact any of the members should you have any ideas for future events - see below for the names and contact details of the Committee There is a list of the current committee members posted below and on the Friends’ notice board in the school.
----------------------------------- TREATS FOR TROOPS Caroline Stinton has been organising boxes for the troops in Afghanistan. She recently received the following letter from the mother of an Old Sandroydian: Dear Caroline As I arrived on the ward at Camp Bastion to work, one of the first things I noticed was the Sandroyd logo on a letter. My son Alexander, now 17yrs old, is a former pupil and spent happy years there. There were 2 letters pinned to the wall, I have written to school to thank them and taken a photo of the letters to show Alex when I get home. Maybe the children would like a copy to see where the boxes ended up. Thank you for the boxes that arrived today, the soldiers are all very appreciative of things and thoughts from home. Best wishes Sue Raleigh QARANC --------------------------------- QUIZ NIGHT The Quiz Night proved to be as popular as ever this year as the dining room filled up with picnicking parents, pencils at the ready. Quizmaster Peter Coulson tested our brains with questions ranging from Sport to Art and Literature and a supper round which challenged the contestants' culinary knowledge and linguistic dexterity. Everyone did well and judging from the rising levels of chat and laughter, had a good time, whilst raising money for this term's charity, the Children's Trust. The team names were more creative than ever this year - 'Wine 'Flu' and 'One Wheel Short of a Unicycle' particularly stood out! Despite the attempts of some Year 8 parents on 'Universally Challenged' to flatter the judges with scrawled compliments on answer sheets, the eggheads proved to be 'Paxman's Pests,' doing their namesake proud with an impressive score. Huge thanks to Peter Coulson for finding time in his crazy schedule to set great questions and to host the evening and to everyone who supported the evening. A real highlight in a wet, cold term! REELING PARTY Friday 5th February 2010 There was certainly a 'touch of tartan' at the 8's reeling social with Hanford this year! Checked shirts and skirts and tartan ribbons worn as wristbands were the order of the day, as around 80 girls and boys filled the theatre. They danced with great panache (thanks to Mrs MacKay's training!) and twirled to the 'Dashing White Sergeant' and 'Strip the Willow' before breaking for fizzy cranberry juice cocktails and crisps. Then, Morty Dickson, resplendent in dress kilt and jacket tapped his toe and played the pipes brilliantly for a very atmospheric Eightsome. We finished with the 51st - a real feat! Everyone was on sparkling form and really got into the spirit of the evening. Our thanks go to Hugh Nickerson for his kindly but purposeful calling, which helped the reelers through their paces and to Morty for having so much puff! Festive Fare: A bleak Friday in late November was brightened up by the Friends’ Christmas Fair – this time in the festively decorated theatre and with many more stalls than last year. There was something for everyone – from fleecy blankets and funky pyjamas to cupcakes and candles. A pyramid of Sandroyd honey jars graced the produce stall and wreaths and bay trees scented the air. Mince pies and coffee were on offer throughout the day and there was a steady trickle of shoppers, with a mad rush in the hour before pick up for exeat. We raised nearly £800 and this, combined with the other activities of the term will enable the Friends to make a handsome contribution to the Woodcutts Scouts appeal, as well as to continue supporting school activities such as beekeeping. Thank you to all those who set up tables, manned stalls and spent money! This has now become an annual event!

---------------------------------- The Friends’ Rock ‘n’ Roll Evening for Year 8 and invited guests from St Mary’s, Shaftesbury. On the evening of Friday 2nd of October the Friends organised a fantastic social event for all those in Year 8. The theme of Rock ‘n’ Roll had all of the boys and girls strutting their stuff on the dance floor of the Theatre! St Mary’s girls from Shaftesbury were invited and joined in the fun, enabling all of the senior boys to ‘jive’ along to the music with their partners. Many thanks must go to Claire for providing the music, guidance and choreography for the evening and to all of the Friends’ of Sandroyd mothers who assisted with the organisation and running of the evening.

Friendly tennis tournament Glorious late September sunshine and a smattering of sheep were there to greet 26 mothers, racquets in hand, as they hit the tennis courts last Friday. This annual event enables mothers new and old to get to know each other and catch up over coffee and flapjacks, before a few rounds of friendly doubles tennis. This year it was so hot that we had to keep running to the kitchens for jugs of iced water! The tennis was good and the banter even better. Whilst the brilliant Leng pairing of Venetia and her sister-in-law, Annie, walked off with the most points (and bottles of fizz) the prize for the most comic contribution went to Hetty Rutledge and Claire Cripps. Their sparkling wit kept everyone amused and added to the relaxed atmosphere. The tournament over, everyone collapsed onto the lawn under the copper beech to recover with a glass of rose and delicious lunch, before scooping up the children for the long-awaited first exeat. Many thanks to all the mothers who took part and made it such fun -- the first of several events that have been planned to raise money for this term's charity. ---------------------------------
