GAP NEWS

------------------------------------

From Fred Randlehoff

Dear Beloved Sandroyd

I had the privilege of being a GAP student back in the year 2000. It is quite overwhelming to think that some of my old ‘boys’ are now young men.  As the only South African at the time I always  felt welcome (although there were regular disputes about Northern and Southern hemisphere rugby squads – England is still my favourite team after South Africa!).

After my year at Sandroyd I completed a degree in Publishing as well as a BA(Hons) in Visual Communication. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my student years I could not help but to think about the wonderful time I spent in England. Having completed my studies I became a part-time lecturer at varsity. I then moved to Richards Bay (a coastal town with a summer temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and above during summer!). As fate would have it I became an English teacher. This was very challenging as most of my pupils speak Zulu as their home language. Luckily my time at Sandroyd equipped me with the necessary skills (and sometimes patience) to take up the task.

I married my beautiful wife in 2007 and have been blessed with a fantastic life . Thank you Sandroyd for teaching me how to be a gentleman.

Since then I have moved on to become Student/Staff Liaison Manager at a local college. I must admit that I still miss working with schoolchildren, but at least now I get to sit down once in a while. My office also has air conditioning – a necessity in this part of the world!

I would like to thank everyone at Sandroyd, past and present, for teaching me valuable life lessons that I still use today. A special word of thanks goes out to Mr Paul Fowler for helping me to become the man I am today – he is one of those special people who has a great influence on those around him without realising it. I would also like to thank Mr Potter, Mr Brisbane and Mr Jones for teaching me how to think on my feet. Most of my humorous anecdotes are attributed to their hilarious chronicles. Sandroyd has put me on the right track in life and any GAP student should make use of the wonderful opportunity of spending time there (please note that I don’t use the word ‘work’ as it is an absolute pleasure being in the Wonderful World of Wiltshire).

I hope all is well and look forward in staying in contact

Kind regards

Fred Randlehoff

From Bethany Marett

Hello!

I was browsing through some old photos today and having a good old trip down Sandroyd memory lane so thought I would log on to the website and have a browse. What a great site it now is! You've even got room for a bit old GAP gossip so I thought I could possibly add my little piece in and say a big hello to everyone!

After returning to New Zealand at the end of 2004 I did two years of media studies and am now a fully fledged journalist working at a provincial newspaper called the Timaru Herald.  I love being journalist, getting to meet lots of new people everyday and keeping up with what's happening around the place - particularly at the moment some promiscuous English rugby players misbehaving themselves!

Am about to embark next week on a two month tour of Africa which I am very much looking forward to and is the first major travelling I have done since getting around Europe during the summer holidays in 2004.

I often think about my year in England and about all the great times I had.  Have tried to keep in contact with my two other fellow gappers Curtis Middleton and Gareth Phillips but boys really are hopeless with keeping up the communication.  I see Ellie who I also got to spend some months is far better with keeping in contact and has also written in to update on where she's at with life!! I'm still awaiting her opera CD to be released!

Anyway I've probably blathered on enough, I was looking down the staff list and there seems to be a few of the same names I remember although the boarding house seems to have a few new ones.

Please say a big hello to all who did know me and I will certainly return to Sandroyd again one day when I am back in the northern hemisphere.

Take care

Bethany :)

June 2008

                             ---------------------------------------

Eloisa Carr-Jones was a GAP student at Sandroyd until 2004.  She primarily helped out with the busy musical side of school life but, as with all our GAPS, she found herself involved in all aspects of life at Sandroyd.  She kindly contacted me with the following news:

After leaving Sandroyd in July 2004 (golly that seems a while ago), I went to King's College, London to read music.  I had a fantastic time as a student in London and got involved with all sorts of musical things; I was a choral scholar and had singing lessons at the Royal Acadamy of Music. I graduated last summer with a first class degree. Having had such a good time at Sandroyd, I then decided that teaching was the profession for me!  So, I am now doing a PGCE at Cambridge University and hoping to teach Key Stage 2 as from September - I can't wait!

I hope all is well at Sandroyd.  Do send my regards to all the staff.

9th January 2008

------------------------------------

Ed Hintze, an assistant music teacher at Sandroyd in the '90s, won through to BBC's flagship Saturday night show 'The One and Only' as Elton John.  Here he is as himself and as his alter ego Sir Elton John.  Sadly he was voted off on the 5th show, but it was still an immense achievement to have got so far.  We wish him all the best for the future and thank him for brightening up Saturday evening viewing!!
