Wilton Hunt Branch of the Pony Club Novice and Junior Hunter Trials Sunday 4th October 2009 Sandroyd’s entries amounted to an outstanding 14 pupils this year, 9 of whom were new faces, namely: Poppy Weldon, Auberon Czartoryski-Bruseth, Hugh Maitland-Jones, Guy Gibson, Bertie Alexander, Oscar Stratton and his sister Jemima, Noah Jonas and Maria Pia de Nardiz Baselga. All of them had a wonderful time and are look forward to taking part in future competitions. Bertie and Flint It was also a pleasure to see some of our Sandroyd pros demonstrating how it should be done with Archie Lowe taking 4th and Hermione Fenton taking 6th in the 2’3” Class and Hermione Fenton and Georgie Lane taking 6th in the 2’3” Pairs Class. Georgie’s commitment and determination to do well showed as she also took 1st in the 2’3 and 3rd in the 2’6” class – well done! Pia and Sandroyd Spice For Anna Rocke and Octavia Thomson it was an opportunity to build a solid partnership with their new ponies Dun Deal (Merry) and Shadow. Over the last two years poor weather caused the cancellation of the Wilton Hunter Trials held at Sandroyd, which has been disappointing and particularly frustrating for the organisers Nigel and Sally Lefroy of the Wilton Hunt Branch of the Pony Club. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU for their continued commitment to Sandroyd and our facilities - this is such an agreeable competition for all our novice and junior riders. Clayesmore School Inter-Schools Show Jumping Sunday 18th October 2009 This competition is an agreeable one encouraging young/nervous riders and novice horses/ponies with the inclusion of a class called the Beginners’ Stakes with fences ranging 1’6” – 1’9” in height. The Beginners’ Stakes and Novice 2’0” – 2’3” provided Georgie Lane and her new novice pony Bouncer with an opportunity to develop a solid rider/pony relationship. Due to other school commitments I, as the Team Manager, was unable to attend and was happy to hand over this role to Charlie and Jo Lane who reported….. “Georgie had a useful, if not that successful, time at Clayesmore. In the Beginners’ Stakes, Bouncer jumped clear in the first round and then unfortunately knocked one down in the jump-off to finished 10th. In the Novice 2’3” – 2’6” Bouncer again knocked one down but this time in the first round excluding him from the jump-off. In the Novice 2’3 – 2’6”, in which there had been some incredibly fast times, Georgie was reunited with her ‘best friend’ Poppy where too their partnership was tested. Poppy’s bulldog determination to jump anything in sight was, this time, to her detriment as she ‘locked on’ to a fence not intended to be jumped thus causing elimination.” Although no places were won Georgie deserves a big WELL DONE for her efforts and she too can be proud of these, knowing she has ridden a novice pony to the best of her ability where once she would have been less confident. The future is bright! Unfortunately no photographs of Georgie and Bouncer were taken at this particular competition so I include one taken at the Wilton Hunter Trials two weeks before. res.jpg) Georgie and Bouncer ------------------------------------- Sandroyd Pony Club Summer Riding and Care Course On the success of the Easter Riding and Care Course, Sandroyd Pony Club open its doors once again to welcome Hetty O’Devlin with her own pony Tips and Poppy Weldon with her own pony Stuffin; to include Claudia Neish, Poppy Miles and Jemima Shepherd who were more than happy to loan their favourite ponies from Sandroyd. We also welcomed two new recruits namely, Gabriella Drummond and Angus Brewer with his own pony Louis. Claudia and Sandroyd Spice Split by ability, they each took part in a three day course that incorporated two riding and care sessions for the first two days and on the third day tackled a morning’s revision in preparation for the official Pony Club Achievement Badge tests. The afternoon of the third day saw a few Clear Rounds over a course of 5 to 6 fences at a height of 1’0” to 2’3”, followed by the excitement and joy of prize giving. Many went home exhausted and at the same time encouraged by their overall success. From us all here at the centre a big WELL DONE and we look forward to seeing you all again in the Easter of 2010. Some PC badge revision! Also a special thanks to Jo as your help was much appreciated! Hetty and Tips Nicola Beament Head of Riding ------------------------------ Picnic Ride There is no better way than on horse back to enjoy the spectacular grounds of Sandroyd School and its surroundings of Rushmore Estate. So, on Sunday 13th September 2009 the Riding Department arranged a picnic ride for a small group of mixed ability riders. The ride followed the paths of the forest in and around the golf course and over varying terrain, with some gradient ground inviting the pace of canter and the occasional gate as a challenging obstacle to overcome. It was an adventure and on behalf of the Riding Department a big ‘thank you’ to Frances Cattell for her time and overall support on such a wonderful day. ------------------------------- Bruton School for Girls Inter-School Hunter Trials Aldon Park, Sunday 20th September 2009 A week into the Autumn Term, a team of Georgie Lane, Anna Rocke, Octavia Thomson and Archie Lowe took part in the Bruton School for Girls Inter-Schools Hunter Trials to compete in the 11 years and under 2’6” – 2’9” class. Anna & Merry Aldon Park in Yeovil, Somerset was the venue. A prestigious British Eventing course which is set within a “bowl”, ideal for spectators but a demanding course even for the most suspecting riders and their mount. Octavia & Shadow The challenge is created by the design of substantially built jumps on gradient ground but on this occasion the challenge was for Archie Lowe and his pony Gem, created in a more unconventional way. Surrounded by water Gem, Archie’s pony, couldn’t resist the opportunity to stop for a quick drink whilst ankle deep in the middle of the water combination! A wonderful moment captured by the professional photographers on the day and can be viewed on their website at www.jayphotos.co.uk. Water Combination Despite a few hair-raising moments the team enjoyed the success of 2nd place. A marked improvement on 3rd place awarded last year – well done! 2nd place! Many thanks to all the parents for their help on the day! --------------------------------- Leweston Sherborne Inter-Schools Team Show Jumping Competition Saturday 26th September 2009 The 1st exeat of the term and a dedicated team of Hermione Fenton, Archie Lowe and Georgie Lane took part in the Team Show Jumping Competition at Leweston. Archie & Gem It was a pleasure to see Hermione and her pony Misty at this competition as it was a chance for her to compete for the school away from home ground. Very important course walk! Nervous and apprehensive about her own ability Hermione rode with great strength and determination throughout the day and should be proud of her efforts – well done. Hopefully we will be seeing more of Hermione in the future. Hermione & Misty ---------------------------------
