Visit to Mirka Golden-Hann’s pottery studio
In the summer term, children at Sandroyd created ‘creature’ drawings, and Miss Finn took over thirty children’s drawings from Sandroyd to Salisbury Arts Centre, as part of an exhibition called “Animal Fantasies”. We were all very excited to hear whose drawings would be chosen to be part of a pop-up mini exhibition alongside works by famous artists. On Tuesday we heard eight of our pupil’s drawings had been shortlisted! So on Saturday, Miss Finn and the older children set off to Salisbury to take part in a special private clay workshop with resident potter Mirka Golden-Hann. On arriving at the gallery we enjoyed hot chocolate and cake after looking at the exhibition and excitedly witnessed our drawings up on display, before meeting Mirka in her pottery studio. We got to see Miss Finn’s pottery she had made in Mirka’s studio last term, and we learnt about clay types, tools and slip colours. After a couple of amazing hours making in clay, we put our clay creatures next to our drawings in the gallery, and the public started to arrive as part of the art centre’s annual Family Fiesta. People were invited to vote for their favourite drawing and we look forward to hearing who is the overall winner! Our younger artists joined us later on to make creatures and bees out of clay. Before heading home we also enjoyed making bee inspired honey cakes, an interactive tour around the arts space with actors, and a delicious lunch! A special mention to Jamie Cooper and Alex Barkshire who also made the shortlist and had their drawings exhibited, but were on rugby tour and in a match; they will also get to make their creatures in clay with Mirka at a later date. We are hoping she will be coming to Sandroyd for a day of clay very soon.
A big thank you to Miss Finn for entering our drawings and organising our trip, and also to Louise and Mirka at Salisbury Arts Centre. A very enjoyable day and we hope to visit again next year!
